Wolverines win two of three in Wolfpack Tournament

Caitlin Volkmann scored 18 and the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines dominated the first half 30-12 Dec. 29 in a 58-47 victory over Pequot Lakes in the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolfpack Tournament.

The victory gave the Wolverines a 2-1 record in the three-day holiday tournament and secured third place honors.

"I liked how the team responded after losing to Frazee," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said. "I knew Pequot in the final round wasn't going to be easy. We came out strong and played a very good game."

Emily Miron gave the Wolverines 12 points and Hope Theisen scored 10.

Kayla Miller tallied 16 points for the Patriots and Vanessa Lane scored 12.

Keith Ferris saw his Wolverines post their third victory in four games and improve their season record to 7-4.

The Wolverines face Mid-State foe Crosby-Ironton Tuesday on the road and host Park Rapids in a conference tilt Friday.

Katie McCorquodale poured in 22 points from her guard position Dec. 28 as the Hornets bumped the Wolverines from the unbeaten ranks in the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Tournament.

Josi Tappe canned 11 points for the Hornets.

The Hornets led 23-22 at the half.

Heather Theisen and Caitlin Volkmann were the hot shooters for WDC with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Sydney Schissel chipped in with a dozen points.

Eleven players contributed to the scoring as the Wolverines crushed Cass Lake-Bena in the tournament opener Dec. 27.

Caitlin Volkmann had 17 points for WDC while Emily Miron added 12. Hope Theisen, Jennifer Craig and Courtney Dumpprope combined for 22.

WDC dominated the first half, scoring 49-18.

The Wolverines canned 27 of their two-point field goals and tacked on three treys. Cass Lake-Bena was held to eight deuces and five treys.
