Area sports highlights of 2012

• Wadena-Deer Creek's Emily Miron and Verndale's Teresa Moenkedick both passed the 1,000 point scoring mark in their basketball careers.

• Wadena-Deer Creek's Mitch Steffens and Tony Reurink and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Colin Turchin and Dillon Card qualified for the Class A individual state wrestling tournament. Turchin placed third in the heavyweight division. Steffens placed sixth at 113.

• Wadena-Deer Creek's Emma Schmitz qualified for the Class A state cross country meet for the second straight year. The sophomore shattered her 2011 performance by finishing 45th with a time of 15:39.4.

• Wadena-Deer Creek's Emily Miron signed a Division I college volleyball scholarship with North Dakota State University. Miron played on three of WDC's four state tournament teams, including the 2010 state championship team.

• The Wadena-Deer Creek volleyball team was denied a fifth straight trip to the Class AA state volleyball tournament, but they did reach the Section 8AA finals at Bagley against Thief River Falls and won 22 of their 31 matches.

• Howie Kangas took over the head reins of the Wadena-Deer Creek football program. Kangas coached Perham to a 119-65 record over 18 seasons and led the Yellowjackets to the Prep Bowl twice.

• Wadena-Deer Creek's Logan Meyer placed third in shot put at the Class A track and field meet with a toss of 52-0.25. Meyer had the best Class A throw in the state during the regular season, when he put the shot 54-6.75 at the Hawley Booster. Meyer placed sixth in the shot put at state in 2011.

• The Wadena-Deer Creek baseball team reached the Section 6AA baseball tournament in St. Cloud by making their strongest bid for a state berth, under head coach Kyle Dykhoff. The club went 10-3 in their last 13 games.

• Wadena-Deer Creek golfers Jacob Goeden, Heather Theisen and Hope Theisen all qualified for the Section 8AA golf tournament.

• Wadena-Deer Creek tennis players Mike Paavola, Drew Larson, Austin Korkowski and Macy Hartman qualified for Section 8A competition.

• Wadena-Deer Creek softball player Michaela Lehmkuhl tied a 31-year-old home run record of eight, set by Jen Walters. Her record-tying round-tripper was also her third grand slam of the season.

• Wadena-Deer Creek's Rylie Langer finished fourth in the 12-13 bracket of the Elks State Hoop Shoot contest in Hutchinson.
