Wolverines cruise past New York Mills
The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines ran up a 40-13 halftime lead Dec. 20 as they cruised to a 67-31 victory over New York Mills on the WDC court.
Emily Miron tallied a game-high 22 points for the Wolverines. Hope Theisen came up with 10 points, her second double figure effort in a row.
"Hope has really stepped up this year in the scoring column," Wadena-Deer Creek Head Coach Keith Ferris said. We have other girls that are stepping up too."
The Eagles had won three of their four December contests going into their game with WDC. The Wolverines were coming off a 50-43 loss to Pelican Rapids.
"We played well as a team, they were down a little bit, at least two of their starters were out," Ferris said.
A big bonus to the Wolverines was that the big halftime lead gave Ferris a chance to play many of his younger players. Nine players contributed to WDC's scoring.
"Everyone got a lot of playing time for us. A lot of younger girls got to play," Ferris said.
Lydia Irons led the Eagles with nine points. Tori Kempenich canned eight.
The victory lifted the Wolverines to 5-3 on the season. The Eagles dropped to 4-3.
Ferris said the Wolverines are not playing their best basketball yet, but they are on a good track.
"We are kind of at the stage where we want to be," Ferris said. "We're playing fairly well. We just have to keep working to play well at the end of the season."
The Wolverines will host Menahga Jan. 3 and will face Crosby-Ironton in a Mid-State Conference game Jan. 8.
