Those "heavy boots" Sue Volkmann's Wadena-Deer Creek volleyball team put on at the beginning of the season helped her Wolverines sweep a good Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton team 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 Tuesday in the South Sub-Section 8AA championship game at Perham.

The Wolverines have gone after as many tough matches as they could land this season, sacrificing a shining record for a taste of superior competition. After making four straight trips to the Class AA state volleyball tournament, the Wolverines have gone 22-8 against their 2012 opposition.

"I think you look at all the teams that have gone to state in the past, the teams that are going there even more consistently than we are, and they are teams that are playing good competition," WDC Head Coach Sue Volkmann said. "We know it's not all about records."

The Wolverines were able to shake off a tough 3-2 loss to DGF Oct. 16 on their home court Tuesday to gain a berth against north champion Thief River Falls in the Section 8AA championship game at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 on the Bagley High School court. The Prowlers will bring a 25-5 into the title match. The two clubs met for the Section 8AA championship last year in Hawley, and the Wolverines triumphed 3-0. The Prowlers edged WDC 25-19, 26-24 in the Class AA Showcase Sept. 16 at Burnsville.

Heather Theisen came up with 39 assists in another remarkable effort by the junior setter. Theisen has been bothered all year by a sciatic nerve problem in her back.

"For us to be successful, we have to have her play," Volkmann said. "You can't give this kid enough credit for what she has done."

Emily Miron sparked Tuesday's win over DGF with 25 kills and 11 blocks. Caitlin Volkmann added 12 kills and a whopping 30 digs.

"She was all over the court last night. Some people came up and said that was the best game they have seen her play all year," Volkmann said.

Hope Theisen, Heather Theisen and Sydney Schissel combined for 41 digs.

Volkmann saw her team eliminate a lot of the unforced errors that dogged them in their Oct. 16 loss to the Rebels.

Halley Maas led an impressive 100 percent serving night by the Wolverines by going 27 for 27 on her attempts.

Kinzie Molstre led the Rebels with 10 kills while Hannah Young added nine.

The Rebels, who went into the game ranked No. 1 in the south, ended their season with a 21-7 record.
