A veteran Wadena-Deer Creek hungry for a second straight trip to the District 6 tournament handed Staples-Motley an 8-4 defeat Thursday in a sub-district title game on the Wadena diamond.

Kenny Sakry went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs. Jake Rude continued his red-hot hitting by going 2-for-3 with a double. David Najjar was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Jeremy Hoemberg contributed one hit, one run and one RBI.

Post 171 jumped on Staples-Motley early scoring two in the first, one in the second and three in the third.

The victory gave Post 171 a 15-7-1 record heading into their District 6 tournament opener with Albany. WDC advanced to the district last year as a runner-up behind Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale.

Post 171 bows to Albany in District 6 tournament

Albany's Post 512 came up a trio of three-run innings Thursday to down Wadena-Deer Creek 10-3 in the first round of District 6, Division II tournament play at Browerville.

Post 171 was charged with only two fielding errors, but mental mistakes hurt the WDC crew.

"We gave them six extra outs," WDC Head Coach Kyle Dykhoff said. "They put up some crooked numbers on us."

WDC's Jake Rude went 3-for-4 in the loss and Cory Tumberg came up with an RBI double.

Ryan Redfield was hung with the mound loss.

The loss dropped Post 171 to 15-8-1 and set up a 5:30 p.m. game on the loser's bracket Thursday with Maple Lake/Mora. The double elimination tournament is slated to run through Sunday. The winner advances to the Division II state tournament Aug. 2-5 in Sacred Heart.
