BHV Legion squad stays alive in Sub-District 6 play

The Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale American Legion team bounced back from a 7-0 loss to Staples-Motley Monday in Menahga to clip Sebeka 9-4 and stay alive in Sub-District 6 playoff action.

Jalen Busker fired a four-hitter and struck out 11 as he went the distance on the mound for Staples-Motley. Busker walked only two and did not allow an extra base hit.

Busker helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs. Mark Kossan was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Seth Auger and Devon White each came up with two safeties.

Dallas Ehrmantraut also threw a complete game, but the BHV standout walked four and was touched for five earned runs.

Ehrmantraut, Preston Riewer, Ethan Bakken and Matt Fretham, the top four hitters in the BHV lineup, each had one hit apiece.

BHV 9, Sebeka 4

Matt Fretham went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs as BHV bounced back from the loss to Staples-Motley and ousted Sebeka.

Ethan Bakken, Preston Riewer, Austin Selvey and Joe VanDenheuvel also had big games for BHV. Bakken was 2-for-3 in the No. 3 spot, scored twice and drove in a run.

Riewer and Selvey both scored twice. VanDenheuvel was 1-for-3 with two ribbies.

Stetson Burkman went 3-for-4, doubled twice, scored once and drove in a pair of runs for Sebeka. Bob Lusti was 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI in the loss.

Selvey received the starting nod and worked 4 2/3 innings before giving way to Bakken.

The two BHV hurlers combined to strike out four while allowing only one earned run and free pass.

Burkman went all the way for Sebeka but was hurt by four errors. Burkman gave up nine hits, six earned runs and four walks while striking out four.

BHV 7, Park Rapids 6

Steve Riewer's club survived a five-run scare in the bottom of the seventh to edge Park Rapids in Thursday's Sub-District 6 play-in game.

Preston Riewer went 2-for-4, scored once and drove in three runs to spark BHV's 10-hit attack.

Matt Fretham and Nick Brown both collected two hits, while Ethan Bakken scored twice.

Bakken shut Park Rapids out for the first four innings as BHV built a 4-0 lead. After BHV scored twice in the sixth, Park Rapids staged a five-run rally.

Drew Bade drove in three runs for Park Rapids and collected a big two-run double in the seventh inning rally.

Bade shared mound duty with Kyle Goplerud and took the loss. Goplerud fanned five batters in two innings of relief work.
