Rodeo draws 1,100 fans to Wadena County Fairgrounds

More than 1,100 spectators in a standing-room-only crowd attended "The Best Show on Dirt" Rodeo Saturday evening in Wadena.

Putting on the rodeo was the Buffington Rodeo Company and the Wadena Ag Society.

Competition was held in nine events with barrel racing competition drawing a whopping 46 riders.

Sidney Eibes took top honors in the barrel racing with Emily Rothenstein finishing second, Beth Labu taking third, Tamille Johnson placing fourth and Jaime Wendt capturing fifth.

Five prizes were also awarded in breakaway roping with Hiedie Gunderson, Shelby Ling, Kirstin Hewitt, Katie Pitzen and Alicia


Travis Demo was the top performer in the bull riding competition. The only other rider to go the distance on a bull was Jacob Knutson.

Four teams earned prizes in the team roping event. Al Oberfell of Sebeka and Corey Borman of Backus were the winning team. Runner-up honors went to Cody Nesius of Verndale and Mike Lousiau of Eagan. Nesius then teamed up with Jeremy Wagner of Hillman to take third. Fourth place honors went to Bill Vanlith and Dustin Schaffer.

Sebeka's Al Oberfell took first in steer wrestling, while Noha Lassa took second.

Greg Hewitt and Isaiah Pemberton were 1-2 in the calf roping.

Jake Tesher was the saddle bronc champion and David Slipka took first in the calf roping event for riders 40 and above.

Rodeo contestants from South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin joined Minnesota riders.
