Wolverines sail past Rangers 8-6, 23-8

Caitlin Volkmann struck out a dozen and Michaela Lehmkuhl continued her torrid hitting as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines trumped Crosby-Ironton 8-6 and 23-8 Wednesday in a Mid-State twinbill.

Volkmann was in complete charge over the first four innings of Game 1 before the Rangers touched her for two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The Wolverines got to C-I hurler Kassandra Wiseley in the fourth for six runs and tallied two more in the seventh. Wiseley retired the Wolverines on just six pitches in the fifth and sixth innings.

Morgan Lugert went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored twice. Michaela Lehmkuhl and Avery Jackson combined for four hits, three runs and one RBI. Brooke Umland doubled, scored once and drove in two runs.

Lehmkuhl parked her third grand slam homer of the year along with a double and drove in six runs to spark the Wolverines in the second game. Volkmann went 3-for-4, scored four times and drove in one run. Sam Killian led all WDC hitters by going 4-for-6, scoring three times and driving in one run. Melissa Moenkedick went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

The Rangers were leading 4-2 after four but the Wolverines were as sudden and capricious as the rainstorms that swept through the area Tuesday, scoring six runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and then a whopping 13 in the seventh.

Victoria Witthuhn was credited with the win while Volkmann picked up a save in relief. Wiseley was the only pitcher the Rangers used in Game 2.
