Wolverines struggle in 1-2 day at Fosston

Craig Klawitter's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines sandwiched a victory between two tough losses Wednesday in the re-scheduled Fosston Invitational.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-0 lead against perennial headache Sebeka but saw the Trojans rally for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to gain a 7-6 upset win.

Caitlin Volkmann went 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Wolverines. Michaela Lehmkuhl homered and drove in three runs.

The Wolverines helped the Trojans with four errors in the field.

Lehmkuhl went 2-for-2 with two runs and one ribbie and Volkmann went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Wolverines smacked Mahnomen/Waubun 16-5 in their second tournament game.

The Wolverines blew an 8-2 lead in their third outing and lost a 15-11 decision to New York Mills.

Lehmkuhl went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs for the Wolverines. Volkmann was also 3-for-5 at the plate.

Detroit Lakes 10-12, WDC 6-2

The Lakers brought out their heavy lumber Tuesday for a Mid-State Conference fastpitch sweep of Wadena-Deer Creek.

Sadie Larson homered and drove in three runs as the Lakers claimed the opener. Amanda Young tagged a solo shot for DL.

Michaela Lehmkuhl and Ashley Tuttle answered for the Wolverines. Lehmkuhl homered, drove in two runs and scored twice. Tuttle went 2-for-3 with two ribbies and one run.

The Wolverines were leading 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth when the Lakers piled up three runs to tie the game. A four-run sixth completed the damage.

Chaz Butz out-dueled Caitlin Volkmann for the pitching win in Game 1 but it was in the nightcap that Butz was really on her game. Butz did not allow a walk in Game 2 while scattering six hits in a five-inning victory.

Victoria Witthuhn gave up 13 hits but only one walk in the loss.

Arika Johnson collected three hits for the Lakers and Brianna Seebold homered and drove in five runs.

Lehmkuhl was 2-for-2 and had one RBI in the loss while Katelyn Peters was 2-for-3 with one run.

The sweep gave the Lakers a 9-4 record overall and a 6-2 record in the Mid-State. The Wolverines dropped to 2-6 in the conference and 3-6 overall.

Michaela Lehmkuhl slugged a two-run homer, drove in three runs and scored twice Friday as the Wolverines earned a split with Mid-State Conference foe Park Rapids.

The Wolverines held a commanding 9-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh when the Panthers hit them with five runs.

Sam Killian was drove in two runs with two sacrifices in WDC's first game victory.

The Panthers teed off on Victoria Witthuhn in Game 2 scoring six times in the first two innings.

The Wolverines were guilty of six walks and four errors.

"We had too many walks and too many errors," WDC Head Coach Craig Klawitter said. "We couldn't catch up after that rough first inning."

Lehmkuhl went 2-for-4, doubled and drove in two runs in the loss. Volkmann went 2-for-4.

Olivia Vaadeland was the winner of the second game with Victoria Witthuhn suffering the loss.
