Huskies make patience pay off in sweep of Pirates

The Pillager Huskies racked up their first two Park Region softball victories Tuesday as they swept Dan Johnson's Verndale Pirates 14-2 and 13-11.

Carly Bell tossed a four-hitter for Pillager in Game 1. Bell allowed six walks but also fanned six.

Bell, Hannah Horn and Caroline Razinski combined for five runs, five hits and seven RBIs.

Jordyn Glenz was Verndale's top hitter with two safeties.

Kirstin Korfe and Teresa Moenkedick surrendered 15 walks.

The Huskies were just as patient at the plate in Game 2. The Pillager crew took advantage of 14 free passes by Korfe.

An eight-run fifth inning gave the Pirates an 11-9 lead but the Huskies came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Lacy Hiltner was Pillager's top hitter with three safeties in four trips. Hiltner also scored three times along with teammate Kelly Mast. No. 9 hitter Kalley Ladoucerur went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Korfe was 2-for-5 at the plate and drove in four of Verndale's runs. Jackie Swenson had two ribbies. Moenkedick went 2-for-3 and scored three times.

Bell relieved Shayla Hunstad in the fifth and was the winning pitcher of record.

Teresa Moenkedick fired a two-hitter and Sarah Moenkedick homered Friday as the Pirates trounced the Tigers.

Teresa scattered four walks while fanning nine in Verndale's first shutout win of the season. Sarah ignited a five-run third inning with a three-run inside-the-park homer that scored Jordyn Glenz and Jordy Schluttner.

Teresa Moenkedick went 2-for-4 at the plate in the lead-off spot and scored three times. Elyssa Kern and Sarah Moenkedick were both 2-for-3. Kern scored twice for the Pirates.

The Pirates won for the second time in six outings.

The Pirates came up with eight hits but they also benefitted from seven walks and five errors. Only two of their nine runs were earned.

Joy Haataja went 4-for-4, scored four runs and drove in three as the Braves swamped the Pirates Thursday.

The Pirates had a tough day in the field with eight errors.

Alicia Ahlfs and Morgan Clements combined for four runs, three hits and four RBIs in the victory.

Kirstin Korfe and Teresa Moenkedick both went 2-for-3 in the loss.
