Wolverines have plenty of spots open on 2012 golf team

With just one of his top six golfers back from last year Wadena-Deer Creek Boys' Golf Coach Kevin Ross will have plenty of decisions to make before the 2012 season opens.

Hard-working sophomore Jacob Goeden is the only returning starter from last year's squad. Five of WDC's golfers are first-timers.

"I think there will be a lot of rotation in the Top 6 and the junior varsity," Ross said.

Jacob Salge is the team's only senior. Tony Reurink, Mitchell Swanson and Creedan Dunrud are juniors. Sophomores on the squad along with Goeden are Wesley Janson, Cole Koehnicke and Jess Perala. Freshmen out include Matthew Quincer and Wade Piper. Jordan Kern is the team's lone eighth-grader.

"It'll be a fun year because they're all just kind of starting out," Ross said. "We'll see how they do from the beginning of the year to the end."

Ross regards Staples-Motley and Detroit Lakes as the teams to beat in the Mid-State. Detroit Lakes should be one of the top contenders for section honors.
