Wadena-Deer Creek wrestlers Mitch Steffens and Tony Reurink joined Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale standouts Dillon Card and Colin Turchin as Section 6A reps to the Class A state wrestling tournament last Saturday at West Central Area High School.

Steffens took runner-up honors at 113 losing a tough 6-4 decision to New York Mills' Shane Novak. Both wrestlers have been ranked in the state by the Guillotine since before the season began. Novak was Class A's No. 1-ranked 113-pounder as of Feb. 24. Steffens was the state's No. 3.

Reurink notched a 5-3 decision over Barnesville's Kyle Johnson for the 220-pound title.

Both WDC wrestlers earned their second trip to state. For Steffens, a senior who saw his junior year cut short by an elbow problem, the opportunity to wrestle in on more high school state tournament was huge.

"I don't think that in the 15 years I have been coaching I've had a kid as focused as Mitch is this year," WDC Head Coach Norm Gallant said.

Reurink made his first trip to state last year but was ousted by Zumbrota-Mazeppa's Cole Nelson, who eventually placed third. The WDC junior is looking for a top six finish in this year's tournament.

"Tony is a kid that has put in his time," Gallant said. "Nothing is rattling him right now."

Neither WDC wrestler has any illusions about what has given them their chance to wrestle in St. Paul: hard work.

"He's been hard working all through the year," Reurink said of Steffens, who repaid the compliment.

"He keeps going," Steffens said of his big teammate. "He doesn't quit."

Steffens ended the section tournament with a 20-4 season record. Reurink pushed his record to 27-8 in the section meet.

Mike Barthel's Bertha-Hewitt/Raiders established themselves as mean competition for their 2012-2013 opponents at the section meet with two championships, two thirds and five fourth place finishes. Turchin is the only varsity starter that will not be returning.

Card, Class A's No. 6-ranked wrestler, capped an outstanding section tournament by defeating Breckenridge's Greg Erlandson 4-3 to claim the 182-pound title.

Turchin, the second-ranked grappler at 285, pinned his way through the section tournament beating all three of his opponents in 2:40 total to post his third section championship and capture his fourth trip to state. Tuchin met New York Mills' Matt Carlson in the 285-pound finals and scored a pin in just 36 seconds.

Card and Turchin entered the state tournament with records of 37-3 and 37-1 respectively.

Devin Barthel and Josh Lawson had big section tournaments for WDC finishing third at 132 and 138. Barthel was the No. 6 seed but defeated Carlos Guiterrez of Pelican Rapids on a fall at 2:21. Lawson, the No. 5 seed, pinned Mills' Taylor Ericksrud at the 2:41 mark.

Also placing third was Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Dakota Finck who pinned Mills' Alex Mindemann in 37 seconds at 145.

Fourth place honors in the section tournament went to WDC's Sam Waln at 120 and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Justin Gordon at 106, Hayden Truax at 138, Nick Bennett at 160, Andrew Bounds at 195 and Dalton Baker at 220.

"Sam (Waln) was probably in the toughest weight class," Gallant said. "There were five kids in their that were really good."
