Moenkedick makes it 1,000 as Pirates defeat Rebels

A mighty roar went up in the Verndale gym Monday night for Teresa Moenkedick, as the junior guard topped a milestone in leading her Pirates to a 71-43 Section 5A playoff victory over Eagle Valley.

Moenkedick reached 1,000 career point mark in the second half and went on to tally 29 game points to propel the eighth-ranked Pirates into a Thursday game at No. 1 Upsala. Moenkedick is just the second player in the history of the Verndale girls' basketball program to top the 1,000-point mark.

"It was a nice one for us to win, after losing to them twice earlier this season," said Verndale Head Coach Art Schluttner. "We had a very good team effort and play well as a team. We were able to play our type of game with a lot of full court pressure, which cause several turnovers, we also were able to turn it into an up tempo game which certainly plays to our strengths."

Moenkedick went into the game needing all 29 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

"It was great for her because she is a great player and a great person and respected by all of her teammates," Schluttner said.

Ashlee Blashack tacked up 17 points for Eagle Valley.

Sarah Moenkedick reached double figures with 14 points.

Monday's victory was the third straight for Verndale and kept the Pirates flirting with the .500 mark at 12-13.
