Eighth-grader lights up scoreboard

Wadena-Deer Creek fans got a taste of Andrew VanErp's talent on the hardcourt Friday night as the eighth-grader netted a team-high 21 points in a 67-51 victory over Park Rapids.

VanErp started the game as an unlikely hero connecting on just one of his four free throw attempts in the first half.

It turned out that VanErp was just warming up. Over the final 10 minutes of the game he canned four treys, one deuce and six free throws to ignite the Wolverines 41-23 second half scoring edge.

Ryan Redfield also had a big game on his home court with 17 points. Right behind him was Evan VanErp with 16.

WDC Head Coach Tom VanErp saw his team hit on just eight of 25 field goal shots in the first half for a cool 32 percent clip. The visiting Panthers converted on 10 of 23 field goal attempts to take a 29-29 lead into the locker room at the half.

With the score tied at 34-all with 10 minutes left, VanErp clicked on three straight threes. After Redfield dropped in a pair of his five treys, VanErp scored a fourth and connected on six of seven free throws down the stretch. The Wolverines went on a 15-0 run to lead 49-34 with 7:32 remaining.

Evan VanErp led the Wolverines with 10 assists and nine rebounds. Jeremy Sherman pulled down eight boards while Matt Paulson collected seven. Redfield led the Wolveirnes with seven steals.

"I was very proud of how our kids stuck with it while we weren't playing well," said VanErp. "We refocused very well at halftime and finally got things going at the 10-minute mark. The excitement on their faces was fun to see. The kids were scoring, playing good defense and the crowd was into the game."

Chris Goplerud and Scott Wolff paced the Panthers with 11 points apiece.

The victory gave the Wolverines a season split with Park Rapids while improving their Mid-State Conference record to 2-7 and their overall record to 9-13.
