Wolverines reel off victories over Menahga, Sebeka

Tom VanErp's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines completed a season sweep of Wadena County foes Monday night with a 66-57 victory over Sebeka.

Coming off a hard-fought 66-64 win over Menahga Friday night, the Wolverines held the Trojans to just one offensive rebound in the first half and out-scored the host team 40-28. The Trojans came back in the second half to out-score the Wolverines 30-26.

The Wolverines came out fast and grabbed a 10-2 lead. The team shook off its shooting woes on the road by shooting 51 percent from the field.

The victory gave the Wolverines a perfect 3-0 record against other Wadena County teams this season. The Wolverines topped Verndale 80-62 in a Jan. 3 game.

Evan VanErp led the WDC attack with 17 points. Ryan Redfield, Andrew VanErp and Ben Birch joined him in double figures with 15, 12 and 10 points respectively. Redfield had all of his points on three-point shots.

Justin Clark was high point man for the Trojans with 15 points. Carlos Castro and Paul Funk tallied 13 and 11 points.

The Wolveroines controlled the board 46-31 with Birch pulling down 14 rebounds and Evan VanErp grabbing 13. VanErp also dished out six assists.

"I thought we passed the ball really well," VanErp said.

The Wolverines improved to 8-13 with four regular season games remaining. The Trojans saw their record dip to 4-17.

The Wolverines snapped out of a short tailspin Thursday and ended Menahga's five-game win streak at the same time.

Ben Birch canned 17 points while Ryan Redfield tacked up 14 and Jeremy Sherman scored 10 in a very balanced night of scoring by the Wolverines. Tom VanErp's cagers shot 42 percent from the field.

The victory came back-to-back losses to Detroit Lakes and Hawley.

Menahga's Austin Schwartz led all scorers with 24 points. Tanner Schwartz and Markus Tolkkinen netted 14 and 12 points respectively.

The Braves edged the Wolverines on the boards 37-33 but hurt themselves with 27 turnovers.
