Mitchell Swanson, Bridger Pettit and Dylan Phillips combined for seven goals and 11 assists Thursday as the Wolverines snapped a 27-game losing streak by edging the Lakers at Freeman Sports Arena.

The Mid-State Conference free-for-all saw the Wolverines scoring more goals than their previous three games combined and winning for the first time since Jan. 15, 2011 when they stopped Kittson Central 7-2 at Long Prairie.

Swanson had a whopping six assists and one goal while Pettit kicked in with two goals and four assists.

Phillips, an eighth-grader who was called up from Wadena's Bantam team before the Bagley/Fosston game Jan. 17, was the trigger man for the Wolverines, scoring four goals. His final goal at the 12:08 mark of the third period put the Wolverines up 9-7. Alex Mason reduced WDC's lead to one goal with an unassisted goal at the 14:55 mark.

The Lakers played catch-up hockey on their home ice all night. Phillips scored the game's first two goals and David Najjar added a goal at the 11:04 mark to make it 3-1. Taylor Magnuson's short-handed goal at the 14:20 mark made it a 3-2 game.

The Wolverines pulled away from the Lakers in the second period on goals by a pair of goals by Pettit and solo goals by Phillips and Mason Freeman.

Swanson gave the Wolverines their biggest lead of the game when he found the net just 22 seconds into the third period and put his team up 8-4. The Lakers roared back to score the next three goals. Mason, who had a five-point game for the Lakers, scored their final two goals.

The 17-goal game saw just one power play score and two short-handed goals. The two clubs tied 25-all in shots on goal.

Cory McManigle earned the victory in goal with 23 saves.
