Jackson, Wolverines stun Mainstreeters

Senior Avery Jackson came through big for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines Monday night scoring the winning field goal with five seconds left in a 53-52 victory over the streaking Sauk Centre Mainstreeters.

The loss broke a string of seven straight wins for the Mainstreeters and dropped them to 16-4. The Wolverines won for the third straight time in boosting their record to 16-5.

The Wolverines trailed 27-24 at halftime on the Mainstreeters' court. The last three minutes of the game saw the Wolverines nipping on Sauk Centre's heels. Hope Theisen came up with a clutch trey to pull the Wolverines within one, 50-49. Sydney Schissel's steal and a basket by Emily Miron put WDC ahead 51-50 with 35 seconds left. The Mainstreeters regained the lead with a pair of free throws but Jackson drove to the hoop for the winning points.

"This was a big win for us," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said. "When it is a close game like this, every possession counts. We were able to hit some big shots when we needed them."

Miron led the Wolverines with 19 points while Jackson scored 11 and Caitlin Volkmann scored 10. The Wolverines shot 41 percent from the field and a sizzling 88 percent at the foul line where they converted on 16 of 18 attempts.

Miron blocked six shots and dished out five assists.

Macy Weller was high-pointer for the Mainstreeters with 20 points. Elizabeth Ellens came up with 11.
