Volleyball team is top 2011 story

The Wadena-Deer Creek volleyball team followed up their 2010 Class AA state championship season with their fourth straight trip to the state tournament in St. Paul. Sue Volkmann's volleyers placed fourth in the eight-team tournament - defeating Visitation 3-2 in the opening round before falling to top-ranked Marshall 3-1 and Jordan 3-0. The Wolverines ended the season with a 27-6 record. WDC junior middle hitter Emily Miron was named to the all-state tournament team. Miron and teammate Brittney Noon were both named to the Class AA all-state team.

Meyer places sixth in shot

at state track and field meet

Wadena-Deer Creek junior Logan Meyer placed sixth in the shot put at the Class A state track and field championships at Hamline University in St. Paul. Meyer tossed the shot 50-6 in his first state meet appearance.

Three WDC wrestlers qualify

for Class A state tournament

Wadena-Deer Creek's Jared Wegscheid (140), Tony Reurink (215) and Dylan Anderson (285) qualified for the Class A state wrestling tournament in St. Paul after helping the Wolverines claim runner-up honors in the Section 6A team tournament.

Wegscheid ended the season with a 32-7 record and closed out his career with a record of 133-80. Reurink had a 36-10 season mark. Anderson was 26-11 with 21 pins.

New indoor facility for WDC skaters

Eighteen months after an EF4 tornado struck Wadena and destroyed the Wadena Community Center a new hockey arena was completed around the existing rink. The project was a vote of confidence in the future of Wadena's hockey program, giving both youth teams and high school team's indoor home ice for the first time since the 2009-2010 hockey season ended.

Schmitz qualifies for first

Class A state cross country meet

Wadena-Deer Creek freshman Emma Schmitz qualified for her first Class A state cross country meet with a fourth place finish in the Section 8A meet at Bagley. Schmitz was 82nd overall in a windy state meet with a time of 16:19.9.

Volkmann, Craig, Crawford

choose Bemidji State University

Courtney Volkmann, Rachel Craig and Kelsi Crawford all chose to enter the Bemidji State volleyball program. The three girls were standouts on the 2010 Class AA state volleyball championship team.

Turchin places fourth in Class A

state wrestling tournament

Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Colin Turchin earned his third straight trip to state and placed fourth in the 285-pound class. Turchin was the No. 2-ranked heavyweight in Class A going into the tournament. He ended the season with a 21-3 record.

Wolverines reach Section 8AA softball finals

Craig Klawitter's Wadena-Deer Creek softball team fought their way to the Section 8AA finals May 31 before falling to Park Rapids 13-8. The Wolverines won just 12 of their 21 games during the season but three of their victories came in the playoffs.

WDC girls post 20-6 record on hardcourt

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls' basketball team posted a 20-6 season record in the first season under head coach Keith Ferris. The Wolverines staged a dramatic improvement over their 2009-2010 season when they notched a record of 10-15.

Jackson signs letter of intent

with Golden Eagles

Wadena-Deer Creek star athlete Avery Jackson signed a letter of intent to play college basketball beginning in fall 2012 for the University of Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles.

Harper wins first Upper Midwest Regional title

Wadena boxer Kevin Harper won his first Upper Midwest Regional title and qualified for a trip to the national tournament in Indianapolis, Ind. The 16-year-old boxer drew 22-year-old Gaberial Montoya in the 114-pound national bout and went three rounds with the older fighter before losing on a decision.

Shelstad joins Hockey Hub's 'Top 100'

Wadena secondary instructor Brad Shelstad, who started the Wadena-Deer Creek boys' hockey program, was chosen one of Minnesota's Top 100 hockey players by the Hockey Hub. Shelstad was a star goalie for Minneapolis Southwest and later for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Capps, Duensing visit Wadena

Matt Capps and Brian Duensing visited Wadena in January as part of the Minnesota Twins annual Winter Caravan. The two pitchers were accompanied by television play-by-play man Dick Bremer.
