Defensive gem lifts WDC over Moorhead in season opener

The senior-dominated Moorhead Spuds provided Wadena-Deer Creek's defending state champion Wolverines with a strong test Thursday before bowing 3-1 in the season opener.

The Spuds claimed the first game 26-24 but the Wolverines rallied to win 27-25, 25-22 and 25-23 to notch the match victory.

"Nothing like jumping right into the fire to start the season," WDC Head Coach Sue Volkmann said. "The kids really held their composure during this tough match. Moorhead was predominantly seniors and our young kids filling new positions did very well. There is no doubt that our defense won this game for us and we knew this would be our strength this year. Hope Theisen, Caitlin Volkmann, Avery Jackson and Sydney Schissel were outstanding."

Theisen came up with 23 digs while Jackson and Volkmann both collected 18 digs. Heather Theisen and Schissel dug out 10 shots apiece.

Emily Miron recorded 18 kills while Brittney Noon had 13.

Miron had a team-high 16 blocks and Melissa Moenkedick blocked 12 shots.

Heather Theisen, who was taking over the varsity setting duties from all-stater Courtney Volkmann, had 37 assists in her debut.

The Spuds were led offensively by Abby Tietz who had a game-high 19 kills. McKenzie Ernst came up with 18 digs.

The victory improved WDC's winning streak to 36 games over three seasons. The 2009 Wolverines won their final two games of the Class AA state tournament in St. Paul after losing to state champ Marshall in the opening round. They followed it up with a 33-0 season in 2010.
