Post 171 suffers two setbacks

The Wadena-Deer Creek Legion team's quick start hit a rough stretch recently at Bertha and Staples.

Staples-Motley avenged a season-opening loss to Post 171 on Monday with a 5-2 victory.

Jordan Wick went 3-for-3 to pace the Staples-Motley club and Gunner Johnson scored twice. Jordan Jenkins came up with two hits in fourth trips and drove in a run.

Colter Pettit, Tyler Wohlwend and Jake Krause all went 2-for-3 at the plate for WDC. Jake Rude collected a double.

"We just could not get that big two-out hit or get that third out on defense," said WDC Coach Kyle Dykhoff.

Colter Pettit went the distance on the hill for WDC but three errors helped Staples-Motley grab an early 5-1 lead. Pettit was not charged with an earned run and walked only one batter while fanning three.

Jacob Vetsch collected the win with relief help from Jeremy Hoemberg in the fifth.

Steve Riewer's crew took advantage of five free passes to engineer two big scoring innings in a June 16 victory over WDC.

The Bertha-Hewitt squad answered a two-run first frame by Post 171 with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. They put the game on ice in the fourth with a six-run uprising.

Patrick Riewer went 3-for-4 and scored twice in the win. Jared Hoemberg, Dakota Aeling and Dustin Motschenbacher combined for three hits, five runs and three RBIs.

Jonathan Goeden and Ryan Redfield both went 2-for-3 at the plate for WDC with Redfield doubling twice and Goeden once. Jake Rude doubled and walked twice.

Derrick Rude was hung with the loss after giving up nine hits, seven earned runs and four walks in three innings. Rude also fanned three batters. Redfield came on in the fourth and walked one while striking out five.

Aeling chalked up the mound win with a performance that included three walks and nine strikeouts.
