WDC upsets #1 DL in wind-whipped Section 8AA Final Four contest

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines saw their fastpitch season end in a high-wind flurry of runs Tuesday as they gained a split in Section 8AA Final Four play at Frazee.

Playing in a huge wind that damaged property all over west central Minnesota, the Wolverines shocked No. 1-ranked Detroit Lakes 9-6 in Tuesday's first game.

The Wolverines scored once in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead but saw the Lakers storm back to tie the game with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Craig Klawitter's club hit Detroit Lakes' Chaz Butz hard in the eighth, scoring five times.

Katelyn Peters had two hits and scored a run in her lead-off spot. No. 2 hitter Amanda Perkins scored twice. Melissa Moenkedick and Perkins tripled while Morgan Lugert doubled.

Perkins notched the pitching win despite giving up six walks and eight hits.

Park Rapids ousted the Wolverines 14-7 in the loser's-out game that ended WDC's season.

It was Perkins again as the Wolverines went after Park Rapids in an attempt to reach the championship finals. Caitlin Volkmann, the team's No. 2 pitcher, suffered a concussion in Game 1 in a collision with a Detroit Lakes baserunner. The Wolverines fell behind 7-2 after three innings but rallied for four runs in the fourth to cut Park Rapids' lead to one. The Panthers out-scored the Wolverines 7-1 over the final three frames.

Avery Jackson went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Kaitlin Ditsworth went 2-for-3. Katelyn Peters scored twice.

The Wolverines closed out their 2011 season with a 12-9 mark.

Aimee Magnusson tossed a two-hitter as the Otters trounced the Wolverines in the first round of Section 8AA Final Four play.

The loss dropped the Wolverines into the loser's bracket against Detroit Lakes. The Otters, who stunned Otter Tail Central 2-0 in sub-section play, advanced against Park Rapids.

The Otters broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning.

Morgan Lugert had both hits for the Wolverines.

Amber Blondeau had a two-run single and a solo home run for the Otters.

Caitlin Volkmann was hung with the loss.

Amanda Perkins fired a one-hitter and Avery Jackson hit a home run as the Wolverines stunned No. 1 Staples-Motley in the Sub-Section 8AA semifinals May 26.

Michaela Lehmkuhl came up with a double for the Wolverines.
