Aitkin beats WDC 6-1 on the courts

The Wolverines pushed the Gobblers in singles action Monday before losing their second straight home match of the season.

WDC's Dennis Loeper and Mike Paavola pushed their Aitkin counterparts, Alex Anderson and Jack Reeves, to three sets. Loeper won his first game 6-4 but then lost 6-0, 6-1. Paavola was a 6-3 winner in his first match before bowing 6-2, 6-4.

Austin Korkowski was forced to default his match with No. 3 singles foe Lyle Nyberg. Korkowski won the first game 6-3 but lost the second 6-2.

The Wolverines tasted success at No. 4 singles were Drew Larson won 6-4, 6-3 over Adam Burke.

The Gobblers breezed through the doubles matches in straight sets.

The Wolverines put themselves in position to win their first tennis match of the 2011 season Thursday when they hosted the Cardinals on a cold and windy afternoon.

The Wolverines gained a split in singles play by winning the No. 3 and No. 4 matches behind Austin Korkowski and Drew Larson. Korkowski defeated Robin Melse 6-2, 6-0 in straight sets. Larson rallied from a 6-2 loss his opener with Nick Johnson to win 6-1, 6-1.

The Cardinals won the No. 1 singles match as their fine hitter, Guthrie Coughlin, topped WDC exchange student Dennis Loeper 6-1, 6-0. Loeper was playing his first match at No. 1 singles.

Mike Paavola lost the No. 2 singles match to Antoine Moumal 6-2, 6-4.

Grant Longbella and Dale Vogt topped WDC's Joey Pate and Corey Pettow 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles match. The Wolverines forced the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches into three sets.

Eliah Anderson and Matt Green dominated their first match with Colton Paskewitz and Spencer Swendson 6-0 but the Staples-Motley duo rallied to win 6-4 and 6-3. It was a similar situation at No. 3 doubles were WDC's Aaron Karlson and Jaysa Rafi triumphed 6-4 in their opener with Warren Japke and Alex Jensen only to lose the final two sets 7-5 and 6-1.
