Five Wadena boxers claimed victories and two advanced to the Upper Midwest Tournament as the Wadena Boxing Club hosted the Region IV Boxing Tournament Saturday at the National Guard Armory.

Super heavyweight Jose Perez and 114-pounder Kevin Harper advanced through their weight classes unopposed. Both boxers will now fight in the Upper Midwest Tournament against champions from Regions I, II and III. The Upper Midwest is set for April 9-10 at Northern Lights Casino in Walker. Saturday's fights are slated for a 7 p.m. start. Sunday's action begins at 1 p.m.

Wadena's T.J. Steward made a strong bid for the 152-pound title. The Wadena veteran decisioned St. Cloud's Brenden Feller in the semifinals before falling to Fergus Falls' Jesse Wannamacher in the championship bout.

Wadena fighter John Johnson lost a second round RSC to Fergus' Rondale Hubbert at 141 while Wadena's Patrchrick Szathmary lost to Fergus' Nick Soliah at 178 and Wadena heavyweight Justin Isaacson was decisioned by White Earth's Glenn Sommars.

Wadena boxers winning their matches in the Junior and Novice Classes were Neil Janson at 116, Julie Jackson at 110 and Albert Boldt at 110. Janson used his speed to rack up a decision over Detroit Lakes' Jesus Guajardo. Jackson was a winner over Fergus Falls' Samantha Evenson. Boldt gained the victory in a rematch with Leech Lake's Charles Oothoudt.

Wadena novice boxers losing their fights were Cole Cottrell and Sean Dunblazier. Cottrell was decisioned by St. Cloud's Greg Whalen and Dunblazier lost to St. Cloud's Mike Baker.

The Wadena Boxing Club won the Class A team championship trophy and Steward received the Sportsmanship trophy. Detroit Lakes' Shane Kern won Best Boxer honors and Wannamacher earned the Fightingest Fighter award.
