Athletic 'Jackets stop Wolverines

Nick Tobkin canned seven treys in a 27-point effort as the top-seeded Perham Yellowjackets trounced the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 65-34 Friday in the regular-season finale for both clubs.

On a night when the Wolverines presented nearly $6,000 to the Zach Gabbard Fund on behalf of the school and the fans, the Yellowjackets showed why they were ranked No. 1 in the South Sub-Section 8AA playoffs.

Gabbard, a junior forward on the Perham squad, collapsed on the court during a Jan. 20 in a game at Glyndon. He had open-heart surgery in Fargo and was then transferred to the University of Minnesota medical facility in Minneapolis.

The gesture by the Wolverines came following a donation from Perham to WDC after a tornado destroyed the high school last summer.

The Yellowjackets, who won their 12th straight game to improve to 24-1, racked up all the points they needed with a good press in the first half. Tobkin supplied the offense as he hit on six of his treys and 22 of his game points. The Yellowjackets went into the locker room with a 41-18 lead at the midway point.

"They're just very athletic," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said in praising the Yellowjackets. "When you combine athleticism with good basketball skills you've got a pretty good team."

Jordan Reed led the Wolverines with 13 points.

The Wolverines finished the season with 9-15.
