Patriots even score with Wolverines

It could have been a situation where the refs were breaking in new whistles, but whatever the case the free throw had a big effect on the outcome of Friday's rematch between two Mid-State powerhouses.

Class AA's seventh-ranked Pequot Lakes Patriots evened a score with the Wolverines in notching a 69-56 victory. The Pats connected on 28 of 43 free throws as the Wolverines were whistled 30 times.

The Pats jumped out to a 7-0 lead and had a 10-point cushion at the midway point.

Emily Lueck led the Pats with 25 tallies while Mattie Lueck scored 18 and Kylie Beltz canned 15.

The victory sent the Pats into the Section 8AA playoffs with a 24-1 record.

Courtney Volkmann had an impressive scoring night for the Wolverines with 25 points. Emily Miron and Caitlin Volkmann chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively. As a team the Wolverines had a tough night from the floor canning just 16 of 60 attempts for a 27 percent clip.

The Wolverines brought the high-flying Patriots down to earth Jan. 18 with an 81-75 road victory.

The Wolverines, who saw a five-game winning streak stopped by the Patriots, will take a 19-5 record into section play. The two clubs could meet Saturday night in the South Sub-Section 8AA playoffs if they both pass their first tests on Thursday.
