Five WDC wrestlers named all-conference

Five Wadena-Deer Creek wrestlers claimed all-conference honors Saturday as the Wolverines placed second in the Mid-State Conference Tournament at Detroit Lakes.

Jared Wegscheid improved his record to 22-3 by pinning 140-pound foes James Sipper of Crosby-Ironton, Brandon Dahring of Detroit Lakes and decisioning Austin Redemske of Staples-Motley 5-3.

Jacob Wegscheid pinned Jarrett Nosal of Detroit Lakes at the 1:58 mark of their 145-pound match to make the Mid-State team. Wegscheid upped his record to 16-7 with eight pins.

Tony Reurink scored a 3-1 decision against 215-pound foe Bryce Dutton of Detroit Lakes for his all-conference berth. The sophomore standout leads the teams with 23 wins, 47 takedowns, 187 points and four major decisions.

Dylan Anderson hit a highlight in his senior season by pinning Park Rapids' Trai Schmidt and Staples-Motley's David DeYonge in times of 1:09 and 2:12. Anderson is WDC's top pin man with 17.

WDC star Mitch Steffens, who is presently unable to wrestle due to an elbow injury, was a unanimous selection to the all-conference team. Steffens is currently 15-2 on the season.

Honorable mention went to WDC's Zach Bernu and Derrick Rude who finished second in their 125 and 152 weight classes.

Sam Waln, Jordan Rentz and Isaac Lustila all placed third for the Wolverines while Josh Lawson and Jacob Ludovissie both placed fourth. WDC's Devin Barthel was fifth.

Staples-Motley took top honors with 187.5 points while WDC scored 174 for a solid runner-up finish. Rounding out the pack were Detroit Lakes (145.5), Park Rapids (132), Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus (121) and Crosby-Ironton (63).

Crosby-Ironton standout Hayden Zillmer was chosen the Mid-State's Most Valuable Wrestler for 2011.

WDC 39, Park Rapids 29

The Wolverines won six straight matches Thursday in a Mid-State Conference victory over the Panthers.

The Panthers were down 9-6 when Josh Lawson, Zach Bernu, Jordan Rentz, Jared Wegscheid, Jacob Wegscheid and Derrick Rude racked up 27 straight points for the Wolverines.

The Panthers won four of the last five matches but never recovered from the WDC blitz.

Tristin Godell (103) and Tony Reurick (215) also won for the Wolverines.
