Wolverines stun 8th-ranked Patriots

Keith Ferris saw his bench come to the rescue Tuesday night as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines won their biggest victory of the 2010-2011 basketball season.

The Wolverines bumped off Class AA powerhouse Pequot Lakes 81-75 in an overtime game at Pequot. The Patriots suffered their first loss in 14 games.

"We played great as a team," Ferris said. "I was very pleased to see some of our younger players step up and contribute in a close victory."

Emily Miron paced the Wolverines with 23 points while Hope Theisen added 13, Caitlin Volkmann scored 12 and Courtney Volkmann netted 10. Miron pulled down a team-high seven boards while Courtney Volkmann came up with seven steals and dished out eight assists.

Mattie Lueck scored a game-high 27 points for the Pats. Kayla Wangen contributed 15 tallies.

The Wolverines had five treys to Pequot's one and shot 80 percent at the foul stripe where they converted on 24 of 30 shots.

Three WDC cagers, Avery Jackson, Kelsi Crawford and Rachel Craig, fouled out in regulation time and the Patriots were able to send the game into overtime by tying the Wolverines at 69-all.

"Melissa Moenkedick played great defensively in overtime limiting Mattie Lueck to only one of her 27 points," Ferris said.

The victory gave the Wolverines a 3-2 record in the Mid-State. WDC's overall record is 11-2. Pequot drops to 4-1 in the Mid-State and 13-1 overall.

"That was a real hard-fought game," Ferris said. "We beat a quality team and I was extremely impressed with how our team handled their pressure."

The Patriots have been giving up an average of 48 points a game this year. The Wolverines have been giving up 45.
