Rusty Wolverines score only 33 in Fergus

Tom VanErp's Wadena-Deer Creek cagers left their best basketball at home Dec. 29 as they fell to the Fergus Falls Otters 43-33 in the Otter Holiday Classic.

"We didn't play with a lot of energy for most of the game," VanErp said. "We missed many easy shots, especially early in the game."

The Wolverines were rusty after a 12-day layoff. They connected on only one of their 13 three-point shots on the new Kennedy Secondary court and made just 11 of their 47 field goal shots for a 23.4 percent clip. They took 23 shots from the free throw line and hit on only 10.

Jordan Reed scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Wolverines. Bench Birch also grabbed eight boards and Cory Tumberg collected seven. The Wolverines were out-rebounded 50-35.

The two clubs played see-saw basketball for most of the first half and went into the locker room tied at 20-all. The Otters gave up just 13 points to the Wolverines in the second half to gain their second victory in six outings but VanErp, who had seen the Wolverines win two straight road games over Pine River/Backus and Staples-Motley believed it was his own team's shortcomings that gave the Otters their edge.

"This is a game we should have won," VanErp said. "We just didn't take care of the fundamentals of free throw shooting and playing hard."

The 33 points which Dave Rund's team gave up was a huge drop from the 80 points the Otters allowed just eight days earlier in an Central Lakes Conference loss to St. Cloud Apollo.

Mike Millard led the Otters with 16 points which Zach Rengel tacked up 10. The Otters had a bad shooting night themselves as they clocked on just 16 of 55 floor shots for a 29 percent clip and were only two of 13 from three-point range.

The Wolverines were slated to face Breckenridge in tournament action Thursday but the game was cancelled due to the weather.
