Dalton Jampsa and the Underwood Rockets ground down the Verndale Pirates last Friday for a 32-0 Pheasant North Conference victory at Underwood.

Already missing two of their starters, Matt Willis and Jerdan Steiner, the Pirates lost two more in the Underwood game. Zack Meidinger was hobbled by an ankle sprain and Colton Moyer left the game in the first half.

Jampsa hit Ben Woodmann with 65- and 25-yard touchdown passes and scored himself on a nine-yard run. The Underwood quarterback was an impressive 7-of-8 through the air for 172 yards. Jampsa led the Rockets in rushing with 71 yards on 18 attempts. Woodman caught five balls for 150 yards.

Meidinger, who was back in the lineup for the first time this year, carried the ball 19 times for 79 yards. Cody Yungbauer logged 33 yards on seven attempts. The Pirates gained only 103 yards rushing and added just 53 more through the air. Kyle Booth caught two passes for 27 yards. Meidinger grabbed two passes for 26 yards.

The Rockets had the ball for 30 minutes and 59 seconds. The Pirates controlled the ball for only 17:01.

Dan Kneisl led Verndale's defensive effort with seven tackles and 11 assists. Kyle Booth had seven solos, seven assists and two quarterback sacks. Cody Yungbauer helped out on 11 tackles.

The loss dropped the Pirates to 1-5 while giving the Rockets a 5-1 mark. The Rockets are sitting atop the Pheasant North while Bertha-Hewitt and Hillcrest are tied for second with 4-2 records. Eagle Valley is 3-3. Wheaton leads the Pheasant South with a 6-0 record. Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley is 5-1 on the season.

Underwood, Bertha-Hewitt and Hillcrest all have 4-1 records in Section 4, Class Nine-man. Underwood has beaten Bertha-Hewitt, the Bears have topped Hillcrest and the Comets have defeated Underwood.

Verndale's only victory this season has been over winless Ashby. The Pirates have won the Section 4 title the past three years in a row.

"The key for us is that we have to get our players back healthy," Verndale head coach Mike Mahlen said.
