Penalties and turnovers kept nipping the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines in the haunches Friday night as they fell to the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels 27-6.

The Wolverines entertained one of the Heart O' Lakes Conference's best teams with the services of starters like Josh Youngbauer, Nolan Johnson, Taylor Bienusa and Isaiah Toedter. The victory enabled the Rebels to continue their battle for the top spot in the Heart O' Lakes Conference with Breckenridge while the Wolverines were left with the task of ending a four-game losing streak.

Wadena-Deer Creek's Jacob Wegscheid, who led the team with 57 yards on 14 carries, broke loose on a 15-yard romp to score at the 4:07 mark of the second quarter. The touchdown was just WDC's third in their last four games.

Shawn Johnson ran in two touchdowns for the Rebels from the 16 and the five while Tanner Dufault hit Hunter Rosenfeldt with a five-yard scoring pass and scored himself on a one-yard run. Johnson finished the game as DGF's top ground gainer with 89 yards on 18 attempts.

Logan Meyer backed up Wegscheid with 36 yards on eight carries. Jared Wegscheid rushed four times for 26 yards.

Pettit hit on four of his eight passes for 34 yards while his replacement, Evan VanErp, was 3-for-6, throwing the ball for 50 yards. Both WDC quarterbacks were picked off once. Jordan Rentz caught four passes for 54 yards in the loss while Nate Ellingson grabbed two for 25 yards.

"We thought we could throw the ball against them and we did," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said.

The Wolverines penetrated deep into DGF territory twice without scoring. The first time was inside the DGF when quarterback Colter Pettit's pass was picked off after his receiver turned the wrong way.

The yardage difference was only slightly in DGF's favor but the Rebels were able to punch the ball into the end zone in all four quarters. The Rebels had a slim 263-253 edge in total yardage.

Cory Tumberg had a big defensive night for the Wolverines with 12 solo stops and six assists. Duke Harrison and Jacob Ludovissie combined for nine solo tackles and six assists.

The two clubs were flagged 19 times on the Wadena gridiron and lost 120 yards on penalties.

"We had too many penalties and too many miscues," VanErp said.

The Wolverines will host Pequot Lakes in their Homecoming game Friday at 7 p.m.
