Bears bury Pirates

Travis Bertram scored three times and Jared Hoemberg scored twice Friday as the Bertha-Hewitt Bears ran roughshod over Verndale 36-14.

The Pirates were without standout Zack Meidinger for the third straight game and could not move the ball. Mike Mahlen's club racked up just 139 yards on the ground and 28 through the air.

Bertram caught three passes for 90 yards and rushed 13 times for 59 yards. He caught a 20 yard aerial from Matt Fretham for his first TD and ran five yards and 29 yards for the second and third.

Hoemberg scored Bertha-Hewitt's first two touchdowns of the night on runs of eight and one yard.

The Bears were done scoring by the time the Pirates started in the fourth quarter. Nate Bart rambled 21 yards for the first score and Cody Yungbauer busted one in from the three to complete the scoring.

Yungbauer carried 21 times for 80 yards.

Fretham had a big night carrying the ball for Bertha-Hewitt as he logged 102 yards on 20 carries.

Hoemberg was on target with seven of his 10 pass attempts.

Dan Kneisl led the Pirates with 14 stops and Jarden Stinar added 10 tackles. Tim Kern and Colton Moyer combined for 17.

The victory gave the Bears a 2-1 record while dropping the Pirates to 1-2.
