Shockers advance in 14C tourney

The Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers advanced to the second weekend of action in the Region 14C baseball tournament last weekend by winning two of three games.

Bluffton Brave draftee Kyle Dykhoff was out-dueled by Carlos hurlers Ben Bruggeman and Matt Hoelscher in a 2-1 WDC loss Sunday at Stigman Field in Nimrod.

Dykhoff went the distance for the Shockers and did not allow a run after the sixth inning. He fanned two and walked just one while scattering seven Carlos hits.

The Cougars broke on top early as No. 3 hitter Joe Snaza homered with two out.

The Cougars went up 2-0 in the sixth when Snaza hit his second round-tripper of the game. Snaza was the only Carlos player to collect two hits in the game.

The Shockers had no answer for Bruggeman, who allowed just three hits and one walk before giving way to Hoelscher in the ninth.

Jamie Nordlund singled to lead off the ninth and Andrew Dornbusch came into pinch-run. After Taylor Fuhs walked, Travis George grounded out to first, advancing both runners. Dornbusch scored when Dykhoff grounded to short. Casey Johnson grounded out to end the game.

The victory guaranteed the Cougars a return trip to the Class C state tournament. The Cougars will meet either WDC, Bertha or Miltona in the 14C title game Sunday at Nimrod.

Jordan Wohlwend fanned 12 Saturday as the Shockers edged Miltona 3-2 to earn a shot at Carlos.

Wohlwend fired a two-hitter and did not allow a walk.

Both teams scored two in the fifth. Wohlwend singled in J.J. Truax and advanced on a Jayme George base hit. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Nordlund.

The Tigers tied it up as Ryan Peppersack scored on an unearned run and Ryan Emter singled in Jason Arvidson.

The Shockers won the game in the eighth as Eric Blom singled in Travis George with two out.

Wohlwend went 4-for-5 at the plate and Travis George drove in four runs with three hits as WDC opened the tournament with a 15-5, seven-inning thrashing of Verndale.

The Shockers exploded for 18 hits against two Verndale hurlers. Jayme George went 3-for-5 and scored four times. Fuhs, Dykhoff and Truax all collected two safeties apiece.

Steve Schmitz went 2-for-3, homered and drove in three runs for the Bison. Shawn Motl went 3-for-4 and scored three times.

Fuhs, a draftee from Detroit Lakes, walked two and fanned eight in a complete game mound performance.

The Bison stayed alive in the tournament by topping Nimrod 5-2 in the second round.

Motl gave Verndale nine innings on the hill where he walked five but struck out seven and allowed just four hits.

Motl also had two of Verndale's four hits. Ryan Schmitz scored twice for the Bison.

The Blazers rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to oust Verndale from region play with a 4-3 victory.

The Bison committed four errors in the fatal ninth frame which saw Ryan Denny and Marcus Riewer scoring unearned runs. Riewer had three of Verndale's nine hits.

Motl and Mitch Carr came up with two hits apiece for Verndale. The Bison erased a 2-0 Bertha lead with a three-run seventh. Dillon Kneisl and Carr doubled in the breakout inning and Motl singled.
