Summer football camp coming

Photo by Brian Hansel Tom VanErp will be running his summer football camp Monday through Wednesday in Wadena.

Tom VanErp's summer football camp will be held Monday through Wednesday at the Wadena-Deer Creek practice field.

The camp, which is for players in grades 9-12, will go from 6:30-8 p.m. all three days. VanErp drew 27-30 players to his 2009 camp.

The June 17 tornado some WDC football equipment unusable and VanErp has gotten together with new activities director Norm Gallant to order missing gear.

Matt Jones will be replacing Gallant as one of VanErp's assistant coaches this year. Jones quarterbacked the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons during his college days. He coached at WDC in the late 90s and VanErp regards the Verndale teacher as a good fit.

"We're going to tweak our offense this year," VanErp said.

The summer mini-camp puts players on track for the start of fall football training Aug. 16.

"Once that camp is over we're only looking at about two to two-and-a-half weeks before the start of practice," VanErp said.
