Sebeka bests WDC Legion at Menahga

The Wadena-Deer Creek American Legion baseball team could manage only four hits off Sebeka pitching Tuesday as they suffered a 6-1 loss to in the Sub-District 9 baseball tournament at Menahga.

Coupled with a tough 8-7 loss to Bertha-Hewitt on Monday, the Tuesday setback ended the season for Kyle Dykhoff's WDC crew. The team ended their summer schedule with a 6-8 mark.

Paul Funk had WDC's number Tuesday and the Sebeka standout went the distance. Funk walked only one and struck out just four, but benefitted from some good defense.

"Our four hits doesn't reflect how well we hit the ball," Dykhoff said. "We had a lot of 'atom balls.'"

Coming off a runner-up finish in the Class A state high school tournament, Sebeka nursed a 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth when they came up with four runs. Sebeka capitalized on four WDC errors.

Alex Brockpahler and Brandon Mickelson led Sebeka at the plate with two hits apiece. Mickelson also scored twice. Cody Pulju came up with an RBI and a run.

Kevin Tumberg went 2-for-3 for WDC with a double, a run and a stolen base. Cody Redfield had one hit in three trips and drove in a run. Ryan Redfield went 1-for-3.

Derrick Rude gave the WDC Legion 4 2/3 innings of work. Rude was tagged for eight hits and four earned runs while walking two and fanning two. Colter Pettit came on to pitching an inning and a third of relief.

Monday's tournament opener with Bertha saw the WDC Legion explode for six runs in the top of the second to erase a 2-0 deficit. Bertha starter Ethan Bakken left the mound having given up seven of WDC's 10 hits and five earned runs.

The final turn of the cards belonged to Bertha as they rallied from a 7-5 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Patrick Riewer led Bertha-Hewitt with two hits, including a two-run homer, and three runs. Riewer also tripled and reached twice on walks. Bakken had two hits in four trips and scored once. Zachary Tranvik went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.

Tyler Wohlwend homered for WDC and went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Ryan Nelson went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in a run. Cody Redfield and Derrick Rude both came up with RBIs while also scoring a run each.

Jared Hoemberg turned in a great relief effort on the hill for Bertha-Hewitt. Hoemberg surrendered only three hits in five innings of work. He tossed four straight shutout innings before WDC scored once in the top of the seventh.

Tumberg got the starting nod for WDC and scattered nine hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five batters. Rude went 1 1/3 innings in relief and did not allow an earned run.
