WDC nine settles for split with DL

Wadena-Deer Creek's David Najjar slid safely into second base after Detroit Lakes second baseman Connor McLeod had to go high in the air for a throw during Tuesday's first game.

Kevin Tumberg returned to the mound Tuesday to help his Wadena-Deer Creek baseball team gain a Mid-State Conference split with Detroit Lakes.

Coming off a two-week absence caused by an ankle injury, Tumberg pitched six strong innings as the Wolverines won 12-2. The senior star held the Lakers to four hits and fired five innings of scoreless ball. Tumberg fanned four while walking two.

Derrick and Jake Rude supplied most of the run support in a 13-hit attack. Derrick went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Jake also had two hits in three trips to the plate. Tumberg helped himself by going 2-for-3 with a double and two ribbies. David Najjar went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Tyler Fode went 2-for-3 in the loss and scored a run. Brock Johnson reached base twice and scored a run.

T.J. Manning went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs as the Lakers won the nightcap 11-5. Connor McLeod backed up Manning with three hits and two runs. Johnson reached base four times and drove in two runs.

Tumberg, Cody Redfield and Tyler Wohlwend each went 2-for-4 and combined to drive in three runs for WDC.

The Wolverines were leading 3-2 after four but the Lakers erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth and then added four insurance runs in the sixth inning.

Ryan Redfield took the mound for the Wolverines and went four innings. Redfield, who tore his ACL last winter, has just returned to the playing field. He walked four and surrendered four hits and four walks.

"It was good to see Ryan back on the mound," WDC head coach Kyle Dykhoff said. "He has worked hard to get back out on the field. Ryan threw fairly well, we just couldn't get that third out for him."

Najjar came on in relief and pitched three innings.

Staples-Motley 12-8,

Wadena-Deer Creek 4-0

Gunner Johnson struck out 15 in Game 1 and Jordan Riewer tossed a four-hit shutout in Game 2 as the Cardinals swept a pair from the Wolverines Friday in a Mid-State doubleheader.

The Cards grabbed a 9-0 lead in the first game before the Wolverines put up their first run against Johnson. WDC starter Derrick Rude walked seven in suffering the loss.

"We issued too many walks and with a steam like Staples-Motley it will come back to hurt you," Dykhoff said.

Brandon Haglin paced the Cards at the plate with two hits and four RBIs. Jake Rude led the Wolverines with two hits and three ribbies. Ryan Redfield and Colter Pettit also collected hits off Johnson.

Riewer did not allow a walk while striking out seven in the nightcap. Colter Pettit started on the hill for WDC but gave way to Jake Rude in the sixth.
