Tennis team keeping it close

The Aitkin Gobblers made a clean sweep on the court Tuesday in handing the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines a 7-0 defeat.

The Gobblers won six of the seven matches in straight sets. Wadena-Deer Creek's Corey Pettow defeated Jack Reeves 7-5 in the first set of their No. 4 singles match before losing 6-3,(7-3).

Wolverines run into rough

competition at Park Rapids Invitational

Rugged competition marked the Park Rapids Invitational for Pete Tranvik's Wolverines Saturday as seven Wadena-Deer Creek tennis players failed to post victories in the eight-team event.

Mike Paavola, Taylor Garcia and Drew Larson squared off for WDC in singles action. Paavola and Larson fell in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Garcia made it rough for Ngyun Tran winning 6-3 before losing two 6-3 decisions. Garcia bounced back from a 7-5 loss to Ty Midikik for a 7-6 victory. Midikik took a 10-8 decision in the final set.

Cory Pettow switched from singles to doubles and teamed up with Joe Pate at No. 1 doubles for the Wolverines. Kevin Jensen and Matt Green lost to teams from Park Rapids, East Grand Forks and Staples-Motley at No. 2 doubles.

Fergus Falls took top honors in the meet with 33 points while Foley took second with 30.

Staples-Motley 4, WDC 3

Taylor Garcia, Cory Pettow and Zach Norenberg notched singles victories Thursday as the Wolverines lost a tight decision to Staples-Motley.

Garcia was a 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-1 winner over Matt Spar at No. 2 singles. Pettow beat No. 3 singles foe Dale Vogt in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Norenberg blanked Colton Paskwitz 6-0, 6-9 at No. 4 singles.

Austin Hirschey overcame Austin Korkowski 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

The Cardinals swept the three doubles matches, winning the No. 3 doubles matchup by forfeit.
