Nuggets knock Wolverines out

The second-seeded Hawley Nuggets unleashed some superior firepower Thursday as they routed seventh-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek 90-48 in Section 8AA action.

Tom VanErp's Wolverines were battling in the first half and trailed 26-22 with eight minutes on the clock. The Nuggets took off at that point and out-scored WDC 24-9 for a 50-31 halftime lead

"Hawley rained shots from everywhere," VanErp said.

The Nuggets ended up shooting 59 percent from the field with Jacob Bjornson scoring 22 and Taylor Harms adding 20. The Nuggets hit on nine of 21 treys for a hot 43 percent.

The Wolverines shot a cool 34 from the field and made only six of their 24 three-point shots for a 25 percent average.

"We didn't shoot well, which is partly a credit to Hawley's switching man-to-man defense," VanErp said.

The Wolverines were playing without big Jordan Reed, who missed the game because of academic reasons, but still managed 30 rebounds to Hawley's 33.

Scott Syverson paced the Wolverines with 16 points while Kevin Tumberg scored 11.

The Wolverines ended their season with a 10-15 record.
