Wolverines can't catch Pequot

It was one and out for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines as they ran into a red-hot Pequot Lakes team in the Section 8AA tournament.

Emily and Mattie Lueck led the way with 21 and 18 points respectively Thursday as the Patriots ousted Wadena-Deer Creek with a 60-57 cage win at Pequot.

The seventh-seeded Wolverines went into the halftime locker room dead even with the second-seeded Patriots, 30-30. Just seven nights earlier the Patriots stopped a six-game winning streak by the Wolverines with a 62-43 decision.

"This was a great high school basketball game," WDC head coach Brian Silbernick said. "The game was close throughout the second half and we were able to keep a small lead most of the game. At the end, they were able to hit a key basket and the edge in free throws was the deciding factor."

The Patriots hit on 20 of 33 free throw attempts while the Wolverines made 13 of 24. Fourteen of Pequot's free throws came in the second half.

Emily Miron picked up a double-double with 13 rebounds. Kelsi Crawford grabbed eight rebounds as the Wolverines dominated the boards 40-24.

Courtney Volkmann knocked down three treys and scored a team-high 14 points for the Wolverines. Miron nailed an even dozen.

Silbernick's club turned the ball over 23 times while the Pats coughed it up 13 times.

The Wolverines ended their season with a 10-15 record. The Patriots won for the seventh straight time to improve to 22-5.
