Reed sets scoring record

Jordan Reed caught fire Friday and before the night was out, Wadena-Deer Creek High School had a new single game scoring leader.

The 6-5 junior post tacked up 46 points as the Wolverines topped Crookston 85-63 before a partisan crowd. Reed broke a school record of 44 points set in 2004 by Michael Grieme.

Reed connected on 20 of his 27 field goal attempts and went six for 10 at the foul stripe. His 20 field goals broke a 1992 school record of 15 set by Darin Meyer.

Reed also celebrated a double-double by grabbing 11 boards.

"He was hot but you've gotta give credit to our guards too," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said.

Kevin Tumberg has a huge floor night with 13 assists, which tied him for the single-game assist record with Dan Lepper. Scott Syverson opened it up underneath by canning five treys in a 15-point night. As a team, the Wolverines converted on 61.5 percent of their floor shots.

Setting a new scoring record took a little fourth quarter salesmanship by Van Erp, but not much.

"With about nine minutes left in the game Jordan had about 37 and I asked the kids if we should have him go for it. They said 'give him a chance,'" VanErp said.

Just 20 seconds after Reed set the new record he drew his fifth foul and had to take a seat.

Ironically, Crookston had a 6-9 player that would have seen action against Reed but did not make the trip because of illness. His replacement was injured early which created a mismatch that favored the Wolverines.

Josh Bladock led the Pirates with 12 points while Papou Maiga and Ben Curran netted 10 apiece. Eleven players contributed to Crookston's scoring.

The Wolverines improved to 8-10 while the Pirates dropped to 10-10.

Tom VanErp's Wolverines turned the ball over too much against a good zone defense Thursday and lost a squeaker to the Thunder at Long Prairie.

Jake Kingston was top point man for the Thunder with 17 tallies. Taylor Kaiser added 12.
