Breckenridge senior Walker Busse must have spotted some college scouts in the stands Tuesday afternoon as his team went into action against Wadena-Deer Creek.

Busse scored 17 of his 22 game points in the first half as the Cowboys lassoed the Wolverines 69-58 in the Otter Holiday Classic.

Busse knocked down five of Breck's nine treys in the first half and led the Cowboys on a 17-point scoring spree that gave them a 42-25 halftime cushion.

"They are a power team," WDC head coach Tom VanErp observed. "They aren't going to get beat very often."

The Cowboys also played outstanding defense. After giving up a game-opening field goal to Jordan Reed, the Cowboys held the normally strong-shooting Wolverines scoreless until the 9:50 mark when Reed scored again to break their 17-point string.

The Cowboys held WDC sharpshooter Scott Syverson to just three points but the Wolverines hurt themselves with at the foul line by connecting on just 13 of their 26 attempts.

The Wolverines shook off their first half woes to out-score Breckenridge 33-27 in the second half.

"Once we got our feet under ourselves we out-scored them," VanErp said.

Reed was WDC's only double figure scorer with 19 tallies. The Cowboys were led by Busse and by big Joe Terfehr, a 6-6 post who shot treys like a guard and netted 17 points in the win.

The Cowboys earned a shot at Fergus Falls in the tournament finals. The Otters rallied to defeat Eden Valley-Watkins 59-52 Tuesday. VanErp's Wolverines played a 4 p.m. third place game with Eden Valley-Watkins.

The Wolverines travel to Bertha-Hewitt Tuesday and Detroit Lakes Friday.
