Hornets overpower Wolverines

Class A power Frazee captured victories in 11 of 14 weight classes Tuesday en route to a decisive 54-15 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek.

The Hornets racked up six pins against the Wolverines and won seven straight matches between 140 and 215.

WDC's Mitch Steffens pinned Frazee's Tevor Stilke at the 2:45 mark of their 112-pound match. Jared Wegscheid continued his good wrestling with an 8-7 decision over Myrel Schermerhorn at 135. Tony Reurink ended the WDC's tough night of wrestling on a winning note with a pin at the 1:29 mark over Frazee's Tyler Hanson.

The Wolverines will enter the meat of their schedul when they return to action Jan. 5. Norm Gallant's club will start a busy January schedule with a road trip to Wheaton to face highly-touted Border West. Their first home match is Jan. 7 with Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale.

Steffens places second

in Big Bear Tournament

Mitch Steffens grabbed a second place finish at 112 and the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines placed 13th Saturday in the 31-team Big Bear Tournament at Cass Lake.

The Wolverines had 10 wrestlers competing as the second day of the wrestling extravaganza commenced and WDC head coach Norm Gallant saw 13 of his matmen win at least two of their matches.

Steffens defeated Joe Elvecrog of Aitkin at 2:58 in the first round and defeated Walker-Hackensack-Akeley's Tyler Plautz in just 26 seconds to reach the quarterfinals. A technical fall at 4:30 over Seth Hirsch of Barnesville and a 12-0 major decision over Hibbing's Anthony Warner in the semis put Steffens in the 112 finals against Little Falls' Frank Wilczek, Class AA's top-ranked wrestler at 103. The slippery Wilczek came out with a 5-3 decision.

"All of a sudden he's not where he's supposed to be," Gallant said in sizing Wilczek. "Mitch wrestled well all the way through the tournament."

WDC's Jared Wegscheid gained some revenge as he placed fifth at 135 with a 5-2 record. Wegscheid was pinned by Morris wrestler Eric Goette at 5:42 in the quarterfinals but stayed alive in wrestlebacks to face Goette for fifth place. Wegscheid, who had not been pinned since his freshman year, won the rematch 14-8.

Gallant was especially impressed with the performance of eighth-grader Isaac Schroeder at 125.

"Isaac was unbelievable, he just keeps getting better," Gallant said after Schroeder posted a 2-2 tournament record.

Aaron Uselman also earned cudos from Gallant at 160 where he won his first two matches.

The Fergus Falls Otters took top team honors with 204.5 points. The Wolverines racked up 98.5 points in placing 13th.
