Wolverines post big road win

Jordan Reed and Ryan Nelson combined for 38 points as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines nailed up their first road victory of the season Tuesday by beating Pierz 65-61.

One night after falling to Sebeka in a road game, the Wolverines built a 32-24 halftime lead and made it hold up despite a 37-point second half by the Pioneers.

"Jordan and Ryan played an outstanding game," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said. "Both rebounded well and were aggressive in attacking the basket for easy shots."

Scott Syverson backed Reed and Nelson up with a 14-point game.

Brandon Moyer carried the scoring load for Pierz with 23 points.

WDC edged Pierz 28-25 on the boards.

"We played our game, made a few adjustments throughout the game, and made our free throws at the end," VanErp said.

The victory gives the Wolverines a 3-2 mark heading into the Fergus Falls Invitational Tuesday and Wednesday. The Wolverines will face state-ranked Breckenridge in a 2 p.m. first round tilt.

State-ranked Sebeka parlayed size and athleticism into a 24-point victory Monday over Wadena-Deer Creek.

The Trojans were leading by just seven at the half, 35-28, as the Wolverines forced them into a half-court game that compelled them to shoot jumpers.

Sebeka went inside in the second half and dominated the Wolverines 37-20.

"I thought our half court defense was very good considering the athletic ability and talent they have on their team," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said. "We didn't necessarily match up well in a few positions."

The Trojans, who fought their way to the Class A state tournament last year, were led in scoring by Joey Cuperus and Ryan Sharp with 16 tallies apiece. Cody Pulju netted 12.

Scott Syverson led the Wolverines with 16 points. Jordan Reed and Isaiah Toedter were also in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. The Wolverines improved dramatically at the foul line making 10 of 12 free throw attempts.

The Wolverines out-rebounded the big Trojans 28-25 but committed 17 turnovers to Sebeka's nine.
