Hot-shooting Wolverines beat PR-B

Wadena-Deer Creek's Jordan Reed pulls the trigger on a jump shot Tuesday night in Mid-State Conference game with Pine River-Backus. Reed scored a dozen points as the Wolverines topped the Tigers 63-49.

Teams running into Tom VanErp's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines this season better hope they are catching them in a cold spell.

The Wolverines picked up where they left off last year Tuesday night as they sank six treys and shot 54 percent from the field in a 63-49 Mid-State win over Pine River-Backus.

The season opening game was a seesaw affair until the Wolverines found the range on their perimeter shots. Kevin Tumberg made four treys in a 16-point game. Ryan Nelson was also good for 16 points. Big Jordan Reed went inside to score 12 points, eight of which came in the second half. Scott Syverson, one of the club's better outside shooters, sank a pair of treys in scoring 11.

While VanErp was impressed with the field goal shooting prowess of both clubs, he wants to see his team shoot free throws better, and take the time to work the ball inside.

"We need to do a better job of getting the ball inside," VanErp said. "We need to make other teams play defense for 2 to 3 ball reversals. We need to get Jordan Reed more touches."

The Wolverines rebounded with the Tigers 20-20 with Josh Sherman leading the team with four boards.

Jordan Ackerman and Todd Woelfel led the Tigers with 16 and 12 points respectively.

The Wolverines travel to Staples Tuesday for a big Mid-State test.
