Wolverine icemen lose opener to Dragons

Wadena-Deer Creek's Logan Meyer (8) makes a grab for the puck as Litchfield's Brett Raisananen (7) closes in during first period action Tuesday night at the Community Ice Arena.

A retooling Wadena-Deer Creek hockey team ran into a dominating Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato squad Tuesday and suffered a 6-0 home loss in their season opener.

The Dragons out-shot the Wolverines 38-7 and gave Dan Savoie's club a good look at their strength, speed and experience.

"I think the sophomores got a taste for the speed of the varsity game," Savoie said. "They (Litchfield) were ready to go. They came out and put us back on our heels right away."

Despite the dominating shots on goal performance, the Dragons were not able to score more than two goals in any period against WDC's Tyler Muehler. Nate Adams had the most success against Muehler, an all-conference honorable mention pick last year, coming up with a hat trick and scoring a short-handed goal. Quinn Impola, Chase Danielson and Jeff Janckila also came up with goals for the Dragons.

Savoie saw a silver lining as the game progressed and rated the third period as WDC's best of the night.

"I got some pretty good leadership from my juniors and seniors," Savoie said.

Following a two-game trip to the Arrowhead, the Wolverines will travel to Northern Lakes Dec. 10 for a Mid-State Conference game.
