Four letterwinners back for Verndale

Art Schluttner and his Verndale Pirates will need a little extra time this season sorting it all out.

"It will take us a few games to figure out our starters and our varsity rotation," Schluttner said. "With only four returning letterwinners we have a lot of girls with very little or no varsity experience, but we will definitely improve as the season progresses."

Senior Trista Finck and junior Elizabeth Johnson are the only two starters that Verndale has back. Both cagers will play guard.

The Pirates also have letterwinners back in senior guard Heather Hejhal and junior guard Lizzy Yungbauer.

"I expect us to be a team that will come out and pressure other teams in the full court and play tough defense in the half court," Schluttner said.

Making up the rest of the team will be senior forward Jamie Kern, junior guards Jenny Swenson and Ashley Richter, junior forward Chaitra Collison, sophomore forwards Amber Wendt, Harliegh Davidson and Jordy Schluttner, freshman forward Megan Richter and freshman guard Teresa Moenkedick.

The Pirates won nine of their 30 games last year and went 5-8 in the Park Region Conference. The competition in both the PRC and the section looks ferorcious with Bertha-Hewitt, Sebeka, New York Mills, Parkers Prairie, Upsala and Underwood all returning strong teams.
