The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines walked away winners Tuesday as they opened their 2009-10 season with a 58-49 victory over Pierz.

Avery Jackson pumped in 19 points to lead the WDC scoring effort but it was defense that held the Pioneers at bay in the first half, allowing the hometown team only 15 points.

"The girls played very hard and physical," WDC head coach Brian Silbernick said. "Our team defense was very good, especially in the first half."

Courtney Volkmann netted 13 points while Rachel Craig canned 11.

The Wolverines shot 43 percent from the field and showed some good balance under the boards as they hauled down 33 rebounds. Rachael Craig led the team with eight while Craig had seven and both Jackson and Kelsi Crawford grabbed six. Jackson, Toedter and Volkmann all had four steals. Jackson and Hannah Toedter had five assists apiece.

The Pioneers picked up their game in the second half and closed within four down the stretch. Miranda Przybilla paced the Pioneers with 15 points while Amber Preimesberger scored 10.
