Verndale volleyball falls to Henning

The Henning Hornets completed a regular season sweep over Verndale Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory on the Pirates' court.

The Hornets, who nailed the Pirates with a frustrating 3-0 loss Sept. 17 at Henning, won the opener 25-16 but lost a 25-7 decision Verndale in Game 2. Henning prevailed 25-23 in the third and fourth games.

Ashley Richter had 16 digs for Verndale while Trista Finck hammered down 15 kills. Elizabeth Johnson notched three blocks.

The Pirates will return to their home court Oct. 8 when they will host Sebeka.

Pirates place fourth at B-H Invitational Saturday

The Pirates went 2-2-1 and earned fourth place Saturday in the eight-team Bertha-Hewitt Invitational.

Vernale went 2-0-1 in pool play defeating Eagle Valley 30-28, 25-11 and New York Mills 22-25, 25-22, 5-1 and tying Brandon-Evansville 17-25, 25-22.

The pool performance vaulted Verndale into the Final Four where they lost to state-ranked Bertha-Hewitt 25-15, 25-16 and Upsala 25-9, 25-16.

Finck and Richter combined for 35 kills. Brittany Kern had 23 assists while Crystal Haskin notched 19. Brittany Kern was also the team's serving leader with 11 while Jamie Kern led the team in blocks with eight.

Finck came up with 14 digs and eight kills and Brittany Kern dished out 10 set assists in a 3-0 loss to New York Mills.

Jamie Kern racked up three ace serves in the Park Region Conference match-up.

Alicia Boe paced the Eagles with seven kills and six aces. Belsty Helmeke, RaeAnna Salo and Kimberlee Erickson combined for 51 digs. Lauren Rud led Mills with 23 set assists.
