Wolverines defend home court during Homecoming Week

Kelsi Crawford recorded 12 kills and Rachel Craig blocked a dozen shots as the state-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines trounced New York Mills Tuesday in a Homecoming match 25-6, 25-11, 25-17.

The victory kept WDC's record perfect on their home court this season. The Wolverines will host Frazee Oct. 20 in the regular season home finale.

Courtney Volkmann had 22 set assists. Mandy Perkins and Hope Theisen had 11 digs and Caitlin Volkmann had 10 in the sweep.

Alicia Boe came up with 10 digs and nine blocks for the Eagles.

"I definitely think we are playing well," WDC head coach Sue Volkmann said. "Even though Mills was a young and inexperienced team I thought we played well against them."

Volkmann, who saw her club win for the 11th time in 12 matches, sees room for improvement on the offensive end of the court.

"I still want to see us control our offensive attack a little more. We tend to make a lot of unforced errors at time on our offense," Volkmann said.

Coming off a season that saw them qualify for the Class AA state tournament, the young Wolverines have five dual matches and two invitationals to prepare for their defense of the Section 6AA title in late October.

"Our confidence is growing," Volkmann said. "That was our concern, we only have that one senior. With each game we get a little more confident."

The Panthers won a skirmish but the Wolverines prevailed in a four-game set on the Wadena court.

"Park Rapids got some momentum in Game 2 and that carried over into Game 3," Volkmann said. "When Park Rapids made it close in Game 3 we didn't put hits away like we should have and our passing got careless."

The Wolverines shook off their 27-25 loss in Game 3 and dominated Game 4 25-11.

"We played a much more aggressive game in Game 4 and put them away early," Volkmann said.

Craig had a huge blocking game with 13 stops. Courtney Volkmann was 28 of 29 at the serving line with seven aces. Thiesen led the Wolverines with 11 digs while Perkins contributed 10. Brittney Noon had a huge 18-kill effort at the net.
