Shockers eliminated from playoffs

Youth derailed the Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers over the weekend in the Region 14C baseball tournament.

After shading Verndale 3-2 Friday night in the opening round of 14C play, the Shockers went down twice, losing to Nimrod 7-2 on Saturday and Bertha-Hewitt 5-2 on Sunday. Both Nimrod and Bertha-Hewitt have young, fast clubs.

The Shockers ended their season at 18-15 and in doing so said good-bye to manager Randy Jahnke, who is retiring after 10 years at the helm.

"I would like to thank everyone for a great 10 years of baseball," Jahnke said. "Baseball has treated me very well and I am proud to retire as a Shocker."

Verndale took a 2-1 lead into the ninth against the Shockers. The Bison traded solo runs with the Shockers in the third and jumped ahead in the seventh.

J.J. Truax fanned to lead off the bottom of the ninth but Travis George and Eric Blom reached on errors. After Casey Johnson walked, Seth Hamman laced a base hit with the infield in to win the game.

"We put a full court press on them in the bottom of the ninth," Jahnke said. "The pressure was finally off us and on them."

Justin Berg had a sensational game for the Shockers. The Detroit Lakes draftee struck out 16 batters in seven innings before leaving with a strained calf muscle. Jeremy Erickson struck out three in two innings of shutout relief.

Johnson walked three times in the game while Hamman delivered two hits.

Ryan Greenwood went a full nine for Verndale.

Alex Brockpahler threw five straight innings of scoreless ball as Nimrod handed the Shockers their first tournament loss on Saturday.

The Gnats out-hit the Shockers 10-6 with Ryan Tuorila banging out two safeties. Blom and Jordan Wohlwend each came up with a pair of hits for WDC.

Wohlwend held the Gnats to one run through six innings. The Gnats took charge in the seventh with a four-run uprising and then added two insurance runs in the eighth. Wohlwend was hung with the loss while Brockpahler, who gave up only one run in eight frames, recorded the win.

Mark Riewer collected three hits and Matt Hartung homered as Bertha-Hewitt eliminated the Shockers Sunday.

The Shockers blanked the Blazers 2-0 for the Hi-10 League playoff championship in game Aug. 2 at Deer Creek.

The Shockers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the third but Hartung was untouchable the rest of the way. Travis George and Jayme George shared mound chores for the Shockers.
