Three straight mistakes in the fourth inning was all it took Sunday to give Wadena-Deer Creek the Hi-10 League playoff championship.

The Shockers racked up a slim 2-0 victory over the Bertha-Hewitt Blazers in Deer Creek to claim the league's No. 1 spot going into regional play.

The Wadena-Deer Creek squad will be taking a 17-12 record into Friday night's Region 14C tournament opener with Verndale. The Shockers and the Bison square off at 8 p.m. in New York Mills. The top two clubs advancing out of the 14C playoffs will advance to the state tournament. The Shockers are shooting for their first state tournament trip since 2005.

The WDC-Verndale winner will play an 8 p.m. game Saturday with Nimrod or Clarissa in Mills. A second-round victory will pit the Shockers against Carlos, Bluffton, Nisswa or Bertha-Hewitt Sunday at 7 p.m. Carlos, a 2008 state qualifier, is considered the team to beat in the 14C tournament.

"I feel we are a team to be reckoned with," WDC manager Randy Jahnke said. "I feel the Hi-10 League in general is the premier league in the tournament."

Other first round match-ups in the 14C tournament will see Bluffton facing Carlos at 8 p.m. Friday in Clarissa, Bertha-Hewitt playing Nisswa at 8 p.m. in Menahga and Nimrod playing Clarissa at 8 p.m. in Perham.

Jordan Wohlwend won his pitching duel with Matt Hartung Sunday by firing a four-hit shutout. Wohlwend struck out eight and walked four in the nine-inning game.

The Shockers finally broke through against Bertha when Hartung hit Jamie Nordlund with one out in the fourth. Nordlund advanced to second with Jeremy Erickson's liner to left was dropped. J.J. Truax then grounded down the third-base line and the throw to first sailed into right field allowing Nordlund and Erickson to come around and score. Truax, who collected the game's only hit for WDC, ended up on second base.

The Shockers have drafted catcher Taylor Fuhs and pitcher Justin Berg from the Detroit Lakes Angels for their region run.
